The fast and furious nature of elite-level triathlon is back as the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series has already enjoyed two thrilling events as part of its opening offering to fans.
With the battle to be crowned champion firmly underway and with precious Olympic qualifying points at stake too, this year promises to be an epic ride, with plenty of storming swims and red-hot runs thrown in for good measure.
What is the World Triathlon Championship Series?
The World Triathlon Championship Series is the premier international competition in triathlon, in which the world’s best athletes compete across a season of elite racing.
Competitors swim, cycle and run in events staged in major cities across the planet, earning points towards the overall world title.
Organised by World Triathlon, the series showcases Olympic-distance racing at the highest level and plays a major role in Olympic qualification, while also helping to grow the sport’s global popularity and profile.
How does the points system work?
The World Triathlon Championship Series works on a rolling points system across the season, with athletes earning points based on where they finish in each race.
The better the finish, the more points they receive, and the Grand Final carries extra weighting.
The athlete with the most points at the end of the season is declared the champion.
For a standard race, the winner receives 1,000 points. Points then decrease by 7.5 % for every position behind them.
Sprint-distance races are worth 75 % of the normal total, meaning the winner gets 750 points instead of 1,000.
The Grand Final is the biggest race of the season and offers 1,250 points to the winner.
Where are the events being held this year?
There will be nine events during 2026 held in two continents. There are:
Samarkand, Uzbekistan (Olympic distance) - 25-26 April
Yokohama, Japan (Olympic distance) - 16 May
Alghero, Italy (Olympic distance) - 30 May
Quiberon, France (sprint distance + mixed relay) - 20-21 June
Hamburg, Germany (sprint distance + mixed relay) - 11-12 July
London, UK (sprint distance) - 25 July
Weihai, People’s Republic of China (Olympic distance) - 29 August
Karlovy Vary, Czechia (Olympic distance) - 13 September
Finals - Pontevedra, Spain (Olympic distance) - 23-27 September
What is the difference between Olympic distance and sprint distance?
The main difference between Olympic-distance and sprint-distance triathlon is the length of each discipline.
An Olympic-distance triathlon, the format used at the Olympic Games and in most elite World Triathlon Championship Series races, consists of:
• 1.5km swim
• 40km bike
• 10km run
A sprint-distance triathlon, which is shorter and faster-paced, consists of:
• 750m swim
• 20km bike
• 5km run
Sprint races are effectively half the distance of an Olympic-distance event. Because they are shorter, sprint races are often more explosive, with less room for recovery or tactical mistakes. Olympic-distance races tend to place a greater emphasis on endurance, pacing and energy management over a longer period.
Who are the Brits to look out for?
On the men’s side, keep an eye on Alex Yee, who remains one of Britain’s biggest stars after his Olympic success in Paris and is always a contender in the World Triathlon Championship Series, having won in 2024.
Oliver Conway, Max Stapley and Jack Willis are names to look out for too whilst Australia’s Matthew Hauser is the defending champion.
In the women’s races, Beth Potter has made a storming start to the season having already won in Uzbekistan and finished second in Japan as she looks to win a second title following her success in 2023.
The 2024 Olympic double bronze medallist has finished on the overall podium in the last two years, whilst 2020 champion and Olympic gold medallist Georgia Taylor-Brown, 2025 T100 champion Kate Waugh and Sian Rainsley are all in the mix.
How does the 2026 WTCS season contributes to LA28 qualification?
Athletes are able to collect ranking points towards individual qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games through events on the World Triathlon calendar. The qualification window runs from 16 May 2026 to 18 May 2028, with performances across this period counting towards Olympic selection.
Key qualification events for LA28 include:
