Team GB named the nation's favourite sports team

Team GB has been named the UK's most popular sports team following a

released last week.

Following record-breaking performances at PyeongChang 2018 and Rio 2016, the summer and winter Olympians topped the list with an overall 74% positive opinion.

And it was confirmed that 95% of the population had heard of Team GB, with words such as 'committed', 'competitive', 'dedicated', 'determined' and 'hard working' used to describe the team.

A record number of female athletes were selected to Team GB for both Rio 2016 and PyeongChang 2018, with this resonating very well with females in the UK, scoring a 76% positive opinion.

ParalympicsGB came second in the poll with 69% and third was the England football team with 59% following a successful run to the World Cup semi-final this year. Four Olympic sports help make up the top 10 with the athletics, swimming, cycling and gymnastics teams all featuring.

After 67 medals at an historic Rio 2016, in which the team won golds across a wider range of sports than any other nation, this is another important sign of the pride the British public has in Team GB as the nation's athletes set their sights on Tokyo 2020.

Preparations are well underway with training bases secured at Keio University, Yokohama and Kawasaki, and Team GB, who receives no public funding, will be looking to hit the ground running when it lands in the Japanese capital.

Speaking after the YouGov poll was released, British Olympic Association CEO Bill Sweeney, said: “We take great pride in the diverse demographic of the population who support Team GB and feel it is very much representative of the team itself, both in terms of make-up and medals won. Team GB is the true face of modern Britain with athletes from all four home nations, and every aspect of our society represented.

“Tokyo 2020 promises to be a fantastic Games and knowing that the country is behind the team will only further benefit the athletes as they bid for performances of a lifetime."
