Seven British fighters to go for gold at European Boxing Championships

Britain’s fighters enjoyed another excellent day at the European Boxing Championships in Ukraine, with seven boxers booking their place in tomorrow’s finals in Kharkiv.

All but one of the eight England fighters on show won their bouts to set up shots at European golds in their respective weights.

Galal Yafai and Pat McCormack, who both fought for Team GB at Rio 2016 Olympics, triumphed in their light flyweight and welterweight bouts.

Yafai edged a tight contest with Spanish fighter Samuel Carmona Heredia, ultimately winning a split decision on points.

McCormack, who downed home fighter Levgenii Barabanov to win comfortably on points, will be joined by twin brother Luke, who will get a chance at light welterweight gold after powering past Evaldas Petrauskas of Lithuania, who won bronze at the London 2012 Olympics.

Bantamweight Peter McGrail outclassed Spaniard Jose Quiles Brotons while Cheavon Clarke outscored third seed Roy Korving of the Netherlands in the heavyweight clash.

In the opening bout of the afternoon session, Niall Farrell ensured he will be going for gold in the flyweight after beating Brendan Irvine of Ireland.

Frazer Clarke put in a typically powerful performance in the super heavyweight bout, the final clash of the day featuring a British fighter, against Djamili-Dini Aboudou-Moindze of France.

Calum French suffered a tight defeat earlier in the day, losing on points to home fighter Lurri Shestak, but will still leave the championships with a bronze medal.
