Fit-again McCorkell wants strong World Championship finish

Heading into a World Championships off the back of a disappointing Europeans wouldn’t fill many figure skaters with confidence.

But Jenna McCorkell insists that if history is anything to go by, January’s frustration could turn into elation in Canada this week.

McCorkell began her season in style as she became a ten-time British champion back in December although she skated through a torn abductor muscle to achieve the feat.

That meant the 26-year-old could only finish 21st a month later at the European Championships in Croatia, her worst-ever finish at the competition.

McCorkell now turns her attentions towards the world stage as she bids to bounce back from the injury nightmare that ruined the first part of 2013.

And, having finished a joint-career best 14th last year after a then second-worst finish of 18th at the Europeans, McCorkell is hoping to once again return in style at the World Championships.

“The injury meant that the whole month and the first half of December I didn’t practice at all which meant I wasn’t where I wanted to be for the Europeans,” said McCorkell, who finished 29th at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

“In fact I regret going to the Europeans because even though I felt physically ready I wasn’t anywhere near there mentally. Physically I felt fine but it was the fact that I had not trained properly and it was playing on the back of my mind.

“I didn’t jump in training for four weeks and three days and that is the longest I had ever gone without doing that and I was torturing myself with that in my mind as I went out on the ice at the Europeans.

“So for that reason I really regret going and having that score on my record because I know I can get much better results than that.

“But I am really looking forward to the World Championships now and coming back in style. I have been training with 100 per-cent intensity since the Europeans and I am hoping the worst of it is behind me now.

“Last year I had one of my worst results at the Europeans and followed it up with my best result at the worlds so at least I know I can do that and I can hopefully do it again.”
