Brown and Fowler win; McGoldrick and Cortina out at Euros

Aston Brown and Anthony Fowler joined Sam Maxwell in winning their first bouts at the European Championships as four of the GB Boxing squad fought on day two in Minsk.

Maxwell but not Lawrence Osueke advanced on day one in Belarus with Brown defeating Ireneusz Zakrzewski and Anthony Fowler seeing off Aljaz Venko 24 hours later.

Both Brown and Fowler are fighting in the middleweight category with the former beating his Polish opponent 3-0 and the latter overcoming Venko by the same scoreline.

However there was no such luck for Commonwealth champion Sean McGoldrick, who lost his bantamweight contest with Selcuk Eker of Turkey 3-0 in Minsk.

Joe Cordina also lost his first fight 3-0 this time to Azerbaijan’s Elvin Isayev in the lightweight category with the judges scoring the contest 28-29, 28-29, 27-30.

McGoldrick and Cordina join Osueke in losing first up, the latter falling to light heavyweight Peter Mullenberg, with Fowler set to face Stefan Haertel next while Brown takes on Bogdan Juratoni.
