Morrison revels in best Olympic day as Team GB fight on

Rebecca Morrison revelled in her greatest day on ice as Great Britain gave themselves an outside shot of an Olympic great escape.

Faced with elimination from the round-robin phase during their morning match with the USA, Morrison delivered a stunning two-stone take out to score two points and bag an unlikely British victory.

Considering the pressure she was under, it was an immense moment – without doubt their best at these Games – and generated momentum they carried into the next game with Japan.

Morrison, 29, was again outstanding as she led Great Britain to a 9-3 thrashing, and now they face a third must-win game against Italy.

“It's been absolutely fantastic,” Morrison said.

“Obviously, we had such a high to finish on in the first game. We rode that wave today and we came out there absolutely all guns blazing for that second game of the day. We're absolutely delighted.

“We knew that we needed two wins from today to keep our hopes alive. We've done that and no matter what happens tomorrow, we've done ourselves proud today.”

The permutations are enough to give even the most seasoned brainiac a headache. Now sitting at 4-4 through eight group games, Britain know they have to win today.

Other results will affect them, with Canada and Denmark also on four wins, while South Korea and USA have five.

Great Britain are technically the defending champions but three-quarters of Eve Muirhead’s gold-medal-winning squad from 2022 are retired, with just Jen Dodds remaining.

Sophie Jackson and Sophie Sinclair have joined Morrison as Olympic debutants, and Morrison believes their improved performance is because they have settled into the environment.

“The first game I was absolutely terrified,” she said.

“I was so nervous, and as soon as we got out ther,e I kind of just settled into it a bit. But now I'm just absolutely loving the environment and really grown into it quite quickly I think.

“It's the best environment I've ever played in, I'm absolutely loving it right now. I am feeling quite calm.”
