Rebecca Morrison keeps curling hopes alive with dramatic final end

Rebecca Morrison’s sensational last stone kept Team GB’s curling hopes alive as they beat USA in a Milano Cortina thriller.

Down by one in the last end and without the all-important hammer, the women’s team needed a miracle to prevent a fifth defeat and elimination from semi-final contention.

However, Morrison delivered one of the stones of her life, a double take-out that was played off one American stone wide on the right, ricocheted across the house to push out another and settled on the button to lie two.

USA’s Tabitha Petersen had last stone and could still have secured victory but made an error under pressure, giving Team GB two points and a key victory.

It moves them to 3-4 through seven matches and two wins in their remaining games could squeak them to the semi-finals.

“I think, considering the situation, it's up there for sure as one of my best ever,” Morrison said.

“I think that was one of the most electric moments we've had as a team, the crowds just lit up there and that was so fantastic for us. Yeah, absolutely overjoyed with that.

“We were up against it coming into the last end. Stealing two is never easy but we knew there was an outside chance and we gave ourselves that chance with how the end panned out.

“You've just got to stick to your processes and think about how you're going to come out and make the shot – and then afterwards, hope for the best.

“Absolutely delighted with the outcome there.”

Team GB play Japan in their second game of a key Tuesday, and must win to take their tournament down to the final match against hosts Italy tomorrow.

It appeared they would be knocked out here. USA were second in the table and had built a 7-4 lead through eight ends, with a three-point score in the seventh a key turning point.

Morrison and teammates Sophie Jackson, Sophie Sinclair and Jen Dodds held their nerve to score two in the ninth end before striking at the death.

“Absolutely, I had faith,” Jackson said.

“Rebecca really knows how to perform in the pressure moments. That's why she throws our last stone and I had all faith that she was going to throw it well.

“Just as long as I didn't mess up the line call. We're going to be really close, so it's amazing to see that. And, yeah, it’s electric as Rebecca said.”
