Curlers win second successive silver

Team GB's men's curlers won silver for the second Games in a row after defeat to Canada.

Bruce Mouat's rink were edged out 9-6 by Brad Jacobs' Canada after an attritional contest that was ultimatley decided in the ninth end.

It was there that the Canadians took three and turned the match on its head, with Team GB in control up and to that point.

It left Mouat, Grant Hardie, Hammy McMillan and Bobby Lammie with a difficult final end despite holding the hammer and they were unable to get the two they needed to force an extra end.

"I am just a bit in shock. We felt like we were probably the better team there," said Mouat.

After an edgy and cautious two hours, it was all over so quickly. Team Mouat were looking to right the wrongs of their 2022 silver medal, where they lost to Sweden in an extra end, but ultimately went home with the same result.

It was a tough result to take, with all four members visibly emotional afterwards.

"It took me four years to get over the first silver, so it will probably take a lot longer this time," said McMillan.

"[There were] lot of really good things out there today. I really felt we did bring our A game there for eight ends.

"Unfortunately we gave away a three in the ninth. We really got something going there in the tenth, I thought Bruce was going to play a shot for a three to bring it home. We were just the wrong side of an inch tonight."

Team Mouat have won everything there is to win in curling apart from Olympic gold, though looked unlikely to even reach the knockout stages at points during the round robin stage.

They pulled it together at the right time with the aid of Switzerland defeating Italy to help Team GB seal a semi-final spot, before beating the Swiss in the semi-final as a way of saying thank you.

That gave them a shot at gold against Canada, and they looked well-placed after forcing Canada to twice take just one from their ends with the hammer.

Mouat's sublime double take-out in the sixth end gave the feel that everything was going right before a few shots fell awry in the eighth end.

That opened the door for Canada, who stormed through it and seized the mantle. They powered to gold and left Team Mouat wondering what might have been.

"It was a pretty controlled game," surmised Lammie.,

"We did a lot of things right, flipped the hammer, got the lead after eight ends which is a great position for us. We didn't play our best eighth end but got the one and we felt really in control. A few misses of course, especially from myself.

"The ninth end, their stone placement was really good and we missed four doubles and you just can't do that at this level. That was the difference.

"If Bruce's last freeze sits six inches less, it is probably only a two and we have got a really good chance going into the last end. It was a disappointing finish to the game."
