Curlers staying positive despite defeats

Sophie Jackson insists Team GB’s women’s curling squad are confident of turning their round-robin form around after a second defeat in as many matches.

The squad, which is also made up of Rebecca Morrison, Jen Dodds and Fay Henderson, were beaten 9-3 by South Korea less than 24 hours after losing their opening game to China.

There are nine round-robin matches and so plenty of stones still to curl but they will have to win each of their remaining seven to guarantee a medal match.

More likely, six – or potentially even five – wins will be enough to make it through and Jackson, who skips the team, believes they can turn their fortunes around.

“We had a really strong start, so that was really positive,” she said.

“We were making lots of shots and then I think when we fell behind, we just started to struggle a little bit.

“But we're still feeling really positive, we're making loads of shots, so I'm just trying to build from that now.

“We were trying to create and do all those sort of tap shots which are obviously the harder side to play on, so we just need to fine tune that a little bit.”

The two teams were tied at 2-2 after five ends but Korea Republic grew as the match progressed and took six points from the next three.

Team GB play Canada on Saturday and Morrison is confident they can deliver.

“Every team here is a tough team, we like to think that we are too,” she added.

“We need to come out and show that. We are close, some of our shots are not far away and at this level you get punished.

“Hopefully we can bring that energy tomorrow and flip it around and do the punishing.”
