Yates takes second place overall at Paris-Nice

Simon Yates was denied victory on the final stage of Paris-Nice as Marc Soler snatched the overall title on the final stage.

David de la Cruz won the stage ahead of Omar Fraile, with Soler completing a Spanish one-two-three on the final stage.

He was just three seconds behind De la Cruz, and 35 seconds ahead of the chasing pack, which included Yates, who was in the yellow jersey.

That allowed Soler to overhaul the Brit, taking overall victory by just four seconds with the Izagirre brothers, Gorka and Ion, in third and fourth respectively.

It was a dramatic final stage, with Yates seemingly in control for much of it, but Soler was rewarded for an attack on the leaders on the Cote de Peille.

At one point he had nearly a minute on the chasing pack, and while they cut that deficit, he had just enough to hold on for the biggest win of his career.

Yates, meanwhile, will have to settle for second, matching his performance in the 2017 Tour de Romandie as his best result in a World Tour stage race.

He had taken the yellow jersey on Saturday with victory on the stage into Valdeblore la Colmiane.

Meanwhile Yates' brother Adam took stage five at Tirreno-Adriatico, moving up to sixth overall, with Geraint Thomas in fourth with two stages remaining.
