World Indoors draw to a close in Portland

Great Britain were unable to add to their medal tally on the final day in Portland as they finished the 2016 World Indoor Athletics Championships with three medals.

After high jump silver for Robbie Grabarz and bronze for Tiffany Porter and Lorraine Ugen in the 60m hurdles and long jump respectively, Great Britain looked to add to their tally on day four on Sunday.

Seven British athletes were in action with Stephanie Twell and Lee Emmanuel both finishing sixth in their respective 3,000m races.

Twell clocked 9:00.38 minutes behind champion Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba while fellow Brit Josephine Moultrie was 13th on her British Athletics senior debut.

“I’m happy,” Twell told British Athletics. “It’s different to a diamond league race.

“It’s a World Championships and you’re here to compete.

“I was really happy with the way I ran it – and it was harder for me at the finish – I couldn’t finish it how I wanted to, because I did the work early on. But now that’s touched something and now I know where I am at.”

Elsewhere on the track, Chris O’Hare was eighth in the 1500m behind home favourite Matt Centrowitz while 60m hurdler Lawrence Clarke missed out on a place in the final.

And in the field events, Isobel Pooley could only manage a clearance of 1.89m for tenth in the high jump although Dan Bramble recoded a fifth round personal best of 8.14m – as well as 8.12m in an earlier round – for sixth in the long jump.

He said “It was a good competition jumping against some of the world’s best so I’m happy to come away with two PBs back to back.

“It shows that I can perform at a major champs and hopefully that will push me on for the Olympics.”
