Wilson takes bronze at Windsuring Europeans

Emma Wilson won her first ever senior medal at the RS:X Windsurfing European Championships in Poland as she claimed bronze in the women’s medal race.

Wilson had narrowly missed out on a podium earlier this month at the World Championships in Aarhus, where she finished fourth and helped to secure Great Britain’s place at the Tokyo Olympics.

And the Dorset youngster was back with a vengeance in Sopot, making the most of favourable racing conditions to finish third behind Zofia Noceti-Klepacka, who won gold, and silver-medallist Stefania Elfutina.

“It’s my first senior medal ever, so I’m super happy, so happy,” she said.

“It was a really good medal race - pretty light winds and shifty offshore.

“There were some points where there were people that I had to keep an eye on. I got a bronze medal so I’m super happy.”

With the Olympics now less than two years away, the 21-year-old Wilson will be a big hope for Team GB when the games come around.

And she’ll be heading to Tokyo ahead of schedule - imminently, in fact - as she makes preparations for the upcoming World Cup.

“I'll go home and then go to Japan for about a month and train out there with the top girls, and do the World Cup there,” she added.

In addition to the bronze medal, Wilson also became the under-21 champion as the fastest competitor in her age-group.
