Two-time Olympic champion Max Whitlock will chase a third World Championship gold next month after being named in the Great Britain squad heading to Doha.
Whitlock is the two-time defending pommel horse champion but will have to contend with Ireland’s exciting talent Rhys McClenaghan, who has beaten him to Commonwealth and European golds already this year.
The 25-year-old is joined in the squad by Olympic horizontal bar bronze medallist Nile Wilson, European floor champion Dom Cunningham, Joe Fraser and James Hall while the women’s team will be announced at a later date.
The championships includes an all-round competition, as well as team and individual awards. The team competition presents a first chance at Olympic qualification with the top three ranked nations automatically qualifying for a place at Tokyo 2020.
“Building on from the successes of the European Championships, we had a number of world class gymnasts competing for team selection and this gives us a real sense of excitement for the build up to Tokyo 2020,” said British Gymnastics performance director James Thomas.
“The selected team for Doha gives us a blend of high calibre gymnasts who will support our ambition to challenge the world’s best in the team event whilst targeting medals on multiple apparatus.”
