Laura Trott shrugged off an untimely illness to claim Commonwealth Games gold and revealed she’d fuelled her medal bid on that most Scottish of dishes – porridge.
The double Olympic champion looked out of sorts in the individual pursuit and scratch race but won track cycling's 25km points race to ensure she would be leaving Glasgow with yet another medal for her collection.
“It's such a relief after the week I've had,” she said.
“I was so devastated that the night before the pursuit I couldn't sleep and I knew something was wrong.
“I went to the doctor that night and explained something was wrong with me. He did all the checks and said nothing was wrong but I knew something definitely was.
“I couldn't sleep that night because my back was really hurting. I went back to him the following morning and he diagnosed me with a kidney infection. I was devastated but I was here so there was no point in me not riding at that point.
“It wasn't the best preparation as I hadn't eaten very well for 48 hours and had just been living off porridge. I had put in all the hard work and knew I was going well because of all the training I had been doing so I didn't want to give in.
“When I woke up this morning I was actually hungry and knew it was going to be a good day. I had a good feed, rested as much as I could and it paid off.”
Trott has become accustomed to delivering at major championships and admitted her early performances in Glasgow left her experiencing a new emotion.
"After the week I've had this medal is right up there with the Olympics. I'm so over the moon," she added.
"Having my parents here again to watch means a lot and I've been worrying them sick over the past two days as I've been ill and they know how much it means to me.
"For me to underperform was really upsetting and it's upsetting for them to see too as they can see how sad it makes me. The crowd were just unreal too - when it came up that I'd won and they went mad I was so happy."
