Taekwondo star Walkden gunning for home gold after 'disappointing' silver

Bianca Walkden is already looking to turn silver into gold on home soil next month after a 'disappointing' second place at the World Taekwondo World Grand Prix in China.

Double world champion Walkden won bronze at the Rome Grand Prix earlier this month and upgraded to silver in Taoyuan but is targeting nothing short of victory when the series moves to Manchester on October 19-21.

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games bronze medallist beat Aminata Charlene Traore of the Ivory Coast, An Saebom of South Korea and Turkey’s Nafia Kusen en route to the +67kg final.

However, she was defeated 22-6 in the gold medal showdown by another Korean, Lee Da-Bin, and was frustrated not to be climbing the top step of the podium.

“I am disappointed with silver because the only colour I want is gold,” said Walkden. “Every time I don’t get gold, I feel it is a disappointment.

“I am happy I reached the final but to me silver is underachieving. The girl was better than me on the day but there is not one person I want a rematch with.

“Everyone is in the way so I want to beat them all. I am looking forward to Manchester now.

“I can’t wait to be on home soil fighting in front of family and friends and to turn that silver into gold.”

Two-time Olympic champion Jade Jones won a meeting against GB teammate Rachelle Booth in the -57kg category on a golden point but then lost her quarter-final to Latvian Inese Tarvida 5-3, while GB Taekwondo’s other competitor on day two in China, Hassan Haider, lost his opening bout at -58kg.
