Stanford grabs World Series silver in Stockholm

Non Stanford insists she is well on the road to recovery for London’s World Triathlon Grand Final in three weeks’ time after finishing runner-up in Stockholm.

The 24-year-old broke her arm at the Mixed Relay World Championships in Hamburg a month ago, but now sits third in the rankings, 13 points behind Gwen Jorgensen at the top, after coming second in Sweden.

And Stanford, who excelled on the bike in Stockholm, believes her fitness is coming together just in time for an assault at London next month.

“It’s all about timing for London and fingers crossed it goes even better,” she said.

“I had to ride for my life and there were four or five of us working really hard so I was relieved when we caught that group and I’m absolutely delighted.

“I was really not sure how my swim was going, I haven’t really been swimming well these last two weeks at all because I’ve been swimming single arm for so long.”

There was also success for London 2012 Olympian Vicky Holland in Stockholm, who powered home to a fourth-place finish.

And she believes the perfect preparation away with Team GB gave her the boost for a best-ever finish at a World Series event.

“I’m really happy with my race,” Holland said. “I felt strong on all three disciplines.

“I had a great camp in St Moritz with the GB team and felt like I produced something good; it’s my best ever Series result so I’m ecstatic.”

Jodie Stimpson, who is fourth in the rankings, had to settle for fifth and conceded it was a disappointing day – but vowed to make up for it at London.

“My legs just didn’t turn up but it’s looking good for the final,” she said. “I’ll recover from this one and give it my all for London.”

Elsewhere, Katie Hewison and Vanessa Raw finished 12th and 18th respectively, while Natalie Milne crossed the line in 29th, one place ahead of placed Emma Pallant to make it seven Team GB athletes in the top 20.
