Reece Prescod added to his growing reputation as he stormed to a stunning victory in the 100m at the Diamond League in Shanghai.
In his first Diamond League race of the season, the 22-year-old produced a season’s best time of 10.04 seconds to hold of home favourites Su Bingtian and Xie Zhenye for an impressive first place.
The time was just 0.01 seconds off his personal best as fellow Brit CJ Ujah first just outside the podium places with a time of 10.18.
Torrential rain greeted the athletes but that didn’t concern Prescod who revelled in the conditions as he topped a strong field.
The finalist from the IAAF World Championships in London said: “When I saw the rain tonight I thought, ‘yes’, I train in these conditions all the time in the East Midlands. It suits me.
“My expectations going in were I knew I had it in me (to win) as long as I executed my race. It is definitely the happiest moment in my time on the Diamond League circuit.
“I don’t know what will happen next (in terms of his next competition), I will need to speak to my agent.
“I have great respect for Su, I’ve raced him before and he’s a top competitor. I’ve really enjoyed racing in Shanghai and I’ll be back again next year.”
Elsewhere Briton Andrew Osagie finished seventh in the men’s 800m in Shanghai, producing a time of 1:46.36.
Osagie struggled to keep up with a fierce pace set by Bram Som of the Netherlands and Wycliffe Kinyamal with the Kenyan prevailing in a personal best time of 1:43.91.
Kinyamal compatriot Jonathan Kitilit finished second, 0.04 behind the fellow Kenyan as Marcin Lewandowksi from Poland claiming third place. Sportsbeat 2018
