Owsley strikes as Great Britain draw Champions Cup opener

David Ralph insists Great Britain are only going to get better after an encouraging start to their Champions Trophy campaign with a 2-2 draw against China.

Lily Owsley scored a second-half equaliser in GB’s first competitive match since they won Olympic gold at Rio 2016.

Hannah Martin also scored as GB completed a gutsy performance under new head coach Ralph, twice coming from behind in the match to secure a valuable point in Changzhou.

Wenyu Xu and Yang Peng both scored for the hosts and Ralph is encouraged ahead of Sunday’s match against Australia – their second of five group games.

"It was a tough match for us, the first matches in tournaments always are, especially against the home team,” he said.

"We are really pleased with several areas of our performance and know that we have to make improvements in other areas.

"In this tournament we get the opportunity to perform better pretty quickly as we face a strong Australia side."

Tess Howard, Erica Sanders and Sarah Jones all made their GB debuts but they got off to a disappointing start, as Xu scored inside seven minutes.

Martin equalised with seven seconds left of the first quarter with a reverse shot under the goalkeeper but their joy was short-lived, with Peng firing in from a rebound.

However, the Olympic champions regrouped and showed plenty of spirit to come back and Owsley found the top corner with an unstoppable effort.

Australia are next on the horizon before further matches against Japan, Netherlands and Argentina.
