Olympic24: Watson targets Rio and divers win bronze in London

British number two Heather Watson says she is targeting a spot at the Rio Olympic Games and Matty Lee and Georgia Ward win bronze in the Team Event of the LEN European Aquatics Championships. Here's our review of the last 24 hours:

British number two Heather Watson admitted the Olympics is a big motivator for her after she progressed to the second round of the Rome Masters on Monday.

The world number 55 beat Sara Errani 6-4 3-6 6-0 in two hours and 16 minutes and will face the Czech Republic’s Barbora Strycova in round two.

Any Brit inside the top 56 players in the singles rankings would be guaranteed qualification, subject to BOA ratification, which is very much on Watson’s mind.

"It was totally on my mind as we started that third set today," she said.

"It's just a big goal of mine and with it in the back of my mind it just motivates me and gives me that little bit extra.

"The Olympics is every four years, it's for your country. I can't even describe the atmosphere, it's unbelievable, and I just love being around the other athletes."

Georgia Ward and Matty Lee kicked off the European Aquatics Championships in style for Great Britain by sealing an impressive bronze medal in the mixed team event.

Ward, diving in her home pool of the London Aquatics Centre, and Lee accrued 353.85 from the judges from their six dives.

That was enough for third place behind Ukrainian pair Iuliia Prokopchuk and Oleksandr Gorshkovozov who took the silver with 396.40 points while the gold went the way of Russia’s Nadezhda Bazhina and Victor Minibaev who retained their European title for a third consecutive year with 413.40.

For Ward and Lee, who are also competing in the mixed synchro on Saturday, it was another podium finish in the same pool where they won World Series silver last year.

“That was incredible. It’s fantastic to come away with a medal,” Ward told British Swimming.

British number one Andy Murray has announced he has ‘mutually agreed’ split from coach Amelie Mauresmo after two years of the partnership.

Murray, who was beaten in Sunday’s Madrid Open final by Novak Djokovic, has won seven titles – including his first two on clay - since bringing in former Wimbledon and French Open champion Mauresmo, but has failed to add to his Grand Slam tally.

The Brit became the first leading male player to employ a female coach when he brought in Mauresmo in June 2014.

In a joint statement, Murray said: “I’ve learned a lot from Amelie over the past two years. She’s been a calming influence in the team and we’ll miss having her around.

“I’ll take some time to consider the next steps and how we progress from here, but I’d like to thank her for everything she has done, she’s been an invaluable member of the team.”

Mauresmo added: “Working with Andy over the last two years has been a fantastic experience for me. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being part of the great team of people he has around him.

“Dedicating enough time along with the travel has been a challenge for me.”

Laura Robson believes the Aegon Open will serve as the perfect start to her grass-court season after confirming she will compete at the event in Nottingham next month.

Robson joins the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka and British No.1 Johanna Konta in the competition, which runs from June 4-12.

The 22-year-old was as high as No.27 in the world back in 2013 but a serious wrist injury has seen her tumble down the rankings.

But now on the comeback trail, she is looking forward to heading back to Nottingham for an event she enjoys.

"I am excited to be returning to Nottingham," said Robson. "I remember how great the grass courts are there.

"Preparing well on the grass is key ahead of Wimbledon and Nottingham is the perfect place to start.
