Olympic24: Thomas on the move, Ennis-Hill targets second Olympic gold

Geraint Thomas moves up to third in the overall standings of the six-day Tour de Romandie while Jessica Ennis-Hill discusses the pressure of defending her Olympic title in Rio as Wednesday marks 100 days to go. Here’s our round up of the last 24 hours.

Geraint Thomas had a solid day in the saddle as he moved up to third overall in the six-day Tour de Romandie in Switzerland.

Sitting fourth after Tuesday’s prologue, Team Sky rider Thomas finished 22nd on stage one to jump up one place.

Germany’s Marcel Kittel won the stage in a sprint finish ahead of Niccolo Bonifazio of Italy.

Spaniard Jon Izagiurre retains the yellow jersey while Thomas is seven seconds back in third, with teammate Chris Froome 26 seconds back in 55th.

Jessica Ennis-Hill admits it’s hard to ignore the pressure of defending her Olympic title despite the success of last year’s World Championships.

Last summer Ennis-Hill showed she was still the one to watch despite taking time away for the birth of her son and spending time on the sidelines with injury to win world heptathlon gold.

That added to the Olympic title she won in London in 2012, with the 30-year-old admitting her golden success in Beijing had exceeded her own expectations.

Focus is now firmly on Rio and another gold medal, and she will be striving to deliver her best performance.

“I do feel that there is less pressure this year because last year was such a huge year for me personally and on the track and to have achieved what I achieved at the World Championships was just something I really didn’t expect, “ she told BBC Sport.

“So in that respect I do feel the pressure is off a little bit. But then I’m a competitive athlete and I want to be the best I can be.

“I’d love to go to Rio and retain my Olympic title. I know it’s going to be incredibly hard but I want to do as well as I can so there’s a pressure creeping up on my shoulders again.”

Saskia Clark admits she is enduring mixed emotions after reaching the 100 days until Rio 2016 landmark.

The occasion coincided with the first day of the Sailing World Cup Hyeres and Clark enjoyed a solid start in the women’s 470 event alongside Hannah Mills, coming sixth and second in their two races to sit fourth overall.

The five-day regatta is one of just a handful of major events remaining before the Olympic Games in August and provides sailors with the opportunity to assess their progress against their likely rivals out in Rio.

“We’re really focussing on a few of our processes at this regatta – especially around starting,” the 36-year-old said.

“It’s really exciting to hit 100 days to go, but also really scary. It really crystallises your mind what we’ve got left to achieve in these next 100 days.”

Laura Robson was unable to build on her first WTA main draw win since 2013 as she lost out in the second round of the Rabat Open.

Aiming to put a troublesome wrist injury behind her, Robson was taking on Hungarian fifth seed Timea Babos following her first round win.

But the former British number one could not convert the early break point chances that came her way and Babos eased to a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Meanwhile Britain's men’s number three Kyle Edmund lost to third seed Benoit Paire 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the Estoril Open.
