Olympic24: Robson heading to Wimbledon as Thomas makes Tour de Suisse move

Laura Robson is set to receive a wildcard to the 2016 Wimbledon Championships, while Olympic champion Geraint Thomas moved into third at the Tour de Suisse. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours:

Olympic silver-medallist Laura Robson has been handed a wildcard for this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

The 22-year-old former British number one has been as high as world number 27 in July 2013, but has struggled with injury for two seasons and now sits just 308th.

Robson will return to a happy hunting ground, having won the Wimbledon Girls Championship at 14 and reached the main draw fourth round in 2013.

Fellow Brits Liam Broady, Alex Ward, James Ward, Tara Moore and Katie Swan were all also given wildcard entries.

At Queen’s Club, 21-year-old Kyle Edmund dispatched world number 18 Gilles Simon 6-4 3-6 6-1 in the biggest win of his career and will now join Andy Murray in the second round.

Geraint Thomas is up to third overall after a strong performance on a mountainous stage five at the Tour de Suisse.

The 126.4km stage from Brig to Cari was won by BMC Racing's Colombian star Darwin Atapuma but Thomas came home just nine seconds back in sixth place, with Pierre-Roger Latour of AG2R La Mondiale finished third on the stage to take the overall lead.

And Team Sky sport director Gabriel Rasch commended the efforts of the whole team after the Brit climbed into the top three.

"It was a really good effort from all the guys today," said Rasch. "I think there might have been a little too much stop-start for G [Thomas] on the last section, but he's in a good place at the moment.

"The win won't be easy, but it's definitely doable. All of the guys are strong and looking ahead."

Sprinter Chijindu Ujah admitted his appearance at the World Athletics Championships last year has done wonders for his confidence.

Ujah, the youngest British sprinter to break the ten-second barrier for the 100m, reached the semi-finals in Beijing last August, before becoming British indoor champion later in the year.

The 22-year-old will go into the 2016 British Championships in Birmingham from June 24-26 with experience of the world stage already under his belt and confident that it is his time to shine.

"For me there's no experience like it,” he said. "I feel everything up to that point there was nothing like it.

"What I've learned is that when everyone is a bit tense I'm going to be a bit more relaxed. That will help me, because I felt I was tense in the semi-final.”

Sprint canoeists Liam Heath and Jon Schofield are still gunning for Rio 2016 glory despite over six years together as a competitive partnership.

They went into London 2012 as the reigning European Champions and World silver medallists before initially finding the going tough in the heats and semi-finals, but nevertheless sealed a bronze.

Heath and Schofield are now ready to resume their Olympic ambitions at the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Copacabana and Heath believes their tried and tested partnership can stand them in good stead in Brazil.

“We get on really well, we both read each other well and we spend a lot of time in each other’s pockets on camps, training and competitions,” he said.

“We haven’t actually been apart for more than three weeks in those six years, and we both know when each other needs space and things like that.” To read more about Heath and Schofield’s enduring bond, click here.  Sportsbeat 2016
