Olympic24: Froome stays in yellow while Team GB name 13-strong Gymnastics squad for Rio

Chris Froome remains in the yellow jersey of the Tour de France and is hoping for a quiet Wednesday while Louis Smith headlines the Team GB gymnasts heading to Brazil. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours:

Chris Froome comfortably retained the yellow jersey on stage ten of the Tour de France and is targeting a similarly trouble-free ride on Wednesday.

It was Orica-Bike Exchange's Michael Matthews who won a sprint finish on Tuesday to claim his first Tour triumph while Froome stayed in yellow – leading fellow Brit Adam Yates by 16 seconds in the overall standings.

Wednesday looks to be another flat stage before Mont Ventoux on Thursday and Froome is hoping to stay out of trouble in preparation for the big one.

"This is the dream, this is what it's all about, to be in yellow. It's a special feeling and I'm going to soak it up and enjoy it while I'm here,” he said.

"Tomorrow we're hoping for a similar day to today, another day we can tick off and get through without too much happening. Ventoux is definitely the next big thing we have our sights on now."

Louis Smith will make his third Olympic Games appearance next month as he headlines the 13-strong Team GB gymnastics squad bound for Rio.

The British Olympic Association has today announced that Smith will join fellow London 2012 teammates Max Whitlock and Kristian Thomas in the men's squad alongside debutants Brinn Bevan and Nile Wilson.

The women's team comprises of five World Championships medallists with Becky Downie set to return for her second Games alongside sister Ellie, who will make her Olympic bow in Brazil.

There are also Olympic debuts for four-time Commonwealth gold medallist Claudia Fragapane, Amy Tinkler and Ruby Harrold.

"I'm so honoured to be selected to represent Team GB," said Whitlock, who won team and pommel horse bronze in the capital four years ago.

One half of Great Britain’s leading mixed doubles partnership Chris Adcock admits walking out at an Olympic Games alongside his wife Gabby will provide a feeling unlike any other he has experienced.

The Adcocks have played badminton alongside each other since their teens but in the build-up to and during London 2012, Chris was partnered with Imogen Bankier.

They reunited as a doubles pairing in 2013, just before their wedding, though and will be part of the eight-strong Team GB badminton squad competing at Pavilion 4 of Riocentro between August 11 and 20.

Adcock said: “There’s absolutely no feeling in the world like walking out into an Olympic Games arena with Great Britain on your back. To be doing that with Gabby makes it even more special.

“It’s a special moment in itself but to share that with someone so close will be an amazing moment. We’ll have to take our time and compose ourselves, and prepare for the match.”

Wednesday afternoon will be the day that Team GB's athletes find out if they have achieved their lifetime goal of competing at Rio 2016.  Team Leader Neil Black and Team GB Chef de Mission Mark England will both be present at Loughborough on Wednesday for the announcement. Team GB claimed 16 medals last week at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam and with reigning Olympic champions like Mo Farah, Greg Rutherford and Jessic Ennis-Hill all expected to return - optimism is high for another bumper haul in Rio.
