Olympic24: Daley defends national title, Christie stays on top in Sochi

Tom Daley demonstrated his intent for the year ahead by taking gold in the men’s 10m platform at the British National Diving Cup while Elise Christie is the pick of the Brits at the European Short Track Speed Skating Championships. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours.

Olympic bronze medallist Tom Daley got his 2016 up and running with victory in the men’s 10m platform at the British National Diving Cup in Southend.

Daley, who took bronze at last year’s World Championships, finished with a final total of 545.80 points to secure top spot ahead of Matty Lee and Dan Goodfellow.

“I’m pretty happy with how today went,” Daley said. “Missing my inward 3 ½ Somersaults, one of my easiest dives, definitely made me fight for gold even more, especially with Matty [Lee] diving fantastically.

“545 is a good score at the start of the season and that performance has really shown me that I can perform well no matter what.

“Every year, I start a little bit better than the one before. I’ve been working really hard and I feel like I’m in the best shape I ever have been so I’m really excited about the year ahead.”

Rebecca Gallantree was also victorious, this time in the women’s 3m springboard with a final total of 326.05 points.

That was enough to see off Alicia Blagg and Katherine Torrance.

Gallantree said: “There were some fantastic dives from the younger divers in today’s final. I heard some big scores being announced, so thankfully I was able to hold them off one more time.”

Great Britain won a host of medals at the European Short Track Speed Skating Championships after Charlotte Gilmartin joined Elise Christie on the overall ladies podium.

Christie had already defended her 500m and 1500m titles in Sochi yesterday and she followed that up by winning all three of her races in the 1000m today to take the overall crown with a race to spare. Gilmartin went on to claim the 3000m event, when Christie finished fifth, to take the overall silver medal on 47 points, with her British team-mate way out in front on 112 points. And in the final race of the Championships, Great Britain won bronze in the men’s 5000m relay, which was won by Netherlands and saw Hungary come second.

Jamie Murray’s busy Australian Open continued as he recorded victories in both the men’s and mixed doubles on Monday.

The Brit was in action in the men’s doubles first up and he and new partner Bruno Soares saw off fellow Brit Dom Inglot and Robert Lindstedt 6-3, 6-4 to progress.

He then returned to court alongside Katarina Srebotnik in the mixed doubles and triumphed 6-4, 6-4 over Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Robert Farahto book his place in the third round.
