Swimmer Ben Proud claims his fourth British record on the final day of the ASA National Winter Meet in Sheffield while Andy Murray is named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours.
Ben Proud insists he is in shock with his performances after breaking a fourth British record of the ASA National Swimming Championships in Sheffield on Sunday.
Proud dipped under 46 second on his leg of the men's 4x100m freestyle with a time of 45.97, the first time he has done so over that distance, having already set a record in the event earlier at the meet.
The 21-year-old also broke the British 50m butterfly record by clocking a 22.39 earlier in the day having already taken Mark Foster's 14-year-old short-course 50m freestyle British record on the opening day.
And Proud is convinced his exploits in the 100m freestyle will put him amongst the world's very best.
"I am totally surprised with that," he said. "I know that the top world rankings are at 46.0 right now so I am really pleased to be in the 45s. After that race, I had absolutely nothing left but that's the nature of the 100m freestyle.
"I'm also pretty pleased with my 50m fly British record from this morning. I was actually shocked, I thought I'd maybe dip under 23 so to get a 22.3 was a big surprise.
"I love the 50m fly, it's why I got into the sport, but it's not as relevant right now with the [Olympic] trials in three months.
"I'm going to take a few days off for Christmas and then I'll get back into it. I've got three months until trials and I am really looking forward to this next chunk of work."
Meanwhile, Aimee Wilmott won her fourth medal of the ASA National Championships by winning the 400m individual medley and Lizzie Simmons took 200m backstroke gold.
Andy Murray admits he was humbled after winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for the second time in three years on Sunday evening.
The 2013 winner was instrumental in guiding Great Britain on a fairytale run to their first Davis Cup victory for 79 years, where they beat Belgium in the final - a feat that also saw them named Sports Personality Team of the Year.
Rugby League legend Kevin Sinfield finished as runner-up in the voting while heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill finished third after winning World Athletics Championship gold following time out of the sport to have a baby.
“I genuinely didn’t prepare anything to say because I genuinely didn’t expect this,” explained Murray. Read more here.
Meanwhile, gymnast Ellie Downie was selected as the Young Sports Personality of the Year after an incredible season.
“I’d just like to say a massive thank you to everyone at British Gymnastics, everyone from my home club, my family, my friends and everyone who has helped me along the way,” she said.
“Well done to all the other nominees but especially another gymnast Brinn Bevan [who was on the original long list of ten nominees] – thank you very much.” Read more here.
Ben Maher was unable to add to his Christmas Masters success at the FEI World Cup qualifier at Olympia yesterday after being nudged into second by Italy’s Emanuele Guadino.
Fresh from clinching the £10,500 winner-takes-all- Christmas Masters at the London International Horse Show on Saturday, London 2012 gold medallist Maher had to settle for second at Guadino shaved almost a second off his time.
Michael Whitaker was third with world number one Scott Brash fourth and Guy Williams fifth as Great Britain made it four riders in the top five.
“My mare could not have done any more,” said Maher.
“Emanuele is renowned for being a naturally fast rider. It is a tight ring but the surface is great and the crowd is the best. I felt like I was at Cheltenham coming down to the last fence."
Jazz Carlin did not expect to have such a strong start to the most crucial season of her career but the swimmer is now adamant she has the momentum to take her all the way to Rio next summer.
Carlin kicked off her season in style earlier this month as she claimed gold in both the 400m freestyle and 800m freestyle at the European Short Course Championships in Israel.
The 25-year-old acknowledges those results have her full of confidence heading into a campaign in which she is desperate to reach her first Olympic Games while also preparing for a European Championships in London
“But I feel like I am much better now and I am in a better position this time around to qualify.
“I think for me I didn’t have huge expectations going into the Short Course Championships so it’s really nice to come away with two gold medals.
“It’s great to get a bit of a fast start to the season and to have some success to build and some momentum to take forward.” Read more here.
