Murray safely through to French Open quarters

Andy Murray moved into the last eight of the French Open with an impressive straight sets victory over John Isner in a game interrupted by the weather.

The Scot has made the semi-finals in Paris in each of the last two years, and battled past the giant Isner in a 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.

The first set was crucial with Murray saving a number of break points, as well as three set points before eventually winning the tie-break 11-9.

"It was a very important tie-break to win. I got lucky on his first set point when I guessed right on a short forehand," said Murray.

"I managed to save more set points and it was a bit more comfortable after that. "It is not easy when you're playing and you get stopped at fairly important moments because of the weather. You can't control it and it's easy to get frustrated.

"When you're on court you have to try and fight for every single point. But it affects the way the court plays and how you have to play."

He then showed his opportunistic side with the first break of the match in the tenth game of the second set leaving Isner with a mountain to climb.

That appeared to take the sting out of the Isner challenge, and an early break in the third set was enough to see him home.

Murray will face Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the quarter-finals after he saw off Japan's Kei Nishikori in four sets.

While there was success for Murray junior, older brother Jamie saw his men’s doubles challenge ended in round three.

Murray and Brazilian partner Bruno Soares, who won the Australian Open in January, went down 7-6, 7-6 to Leander Paes and Marcin Matkowski.

As a result Murray will have to wait to reclaim the world number one spot in the doubles rankings, and his run of three straight Grand Slam finals comes to an end.
