Murray likely to skip Davis Cup with Olympic Games on horizon

Andy Murray is likely to skip this week’s Davis Cup tie with Serbia as he focuses on the defence of his Olympic title in Rio.

But Murray,

may still travel to the quarter-final match in Belgrade to support Leon Smith’s team as they start their title defence.

World number one Novak Djokovic will also be missing from the quarter-final tie, which will be played on clay.

Murray will take a few days off before switching his surface focus to hard courts, where he admits this season’s form has not been ideal, after third round defeats to Federico Delbonis and Gregor Dimitrov in Indian Wells and Miami.

"The Olympics is important to me," he said.

"I loved the two I was involved in and winning the gold medal made me realise how special it is.

"All the guys on the team are great and winning the Davis Cup was one of the best moments of my career, and the whole team's.

"I spoke to Leon last night at the Wimbledon ball. I'd say it's looking unlikely but, even if I don't play, I'm still probably going to go anyway just to be there with the team.

"We are a team and whether I'm playing or not I'll always try to support.”
