Murray and Soares take step closer to O2 semi-finals

Jamie Murray’s serve was the key to beating the Bryan brothers at the ATP World Tour Finals according to the Scot, but his partner Bruno Soares is refusing to think about the possibility of topping the rankings.

After an opening straight sets win on Sunday, the second seeds returned to the O2 Arena on Tuesday and despatched the 16-time Grand Slam winning siblings 6-3 6-4 in little more than an hour.

Murray and Soares lost just seven points on their serve in the whole of the match and Murray, who topped the individual doubles rankings earlier in the year, was pleased with his performance in London.

“We served really, really , well, we never got into any trouble on the serve,” said the 30-year-old.

“I think, for us, when our serve percentage is high we’re really tough to beat, because we’re always putting returns in court so there’s always that pressure there.

“I served well and Bruno cleaned up well at the net, then maybe not quite vice versa, but that’s something to work on for the next match.

“We played with great energy, great communication throughout. We had a good game plan that we executed really well and we are delighted to win.

“We both really enjoy being out there, there’s not much to dislike, playing in front of a lot of people on a great court in the biggest tournament of the year, so I enjoy playing with this guy.”

The reigning US and Australian Open champions are looking to finish the year as the world’s number one pairing, with French duo Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert currently holding a 575-point advantage over the Scottish-Brazilian duo.

But with Mahut and Herbert having lost their opener in London on Monday, and Murray and Soares looking likely to make the semi-finals, the chances of a Murray double atop the year-end world rankings are growing.

Soares, though, is more concerned with just winning matches.

“We came here happy to be here, but we want to win the tournament and I think number one is going to come with that,” said the 34-year-old.
