Murray and Soares reach Queen's last eight with straight sets victory

Jamie Murray kept British hopes alive at the Aegon Championships after a straight sets victory in the men’s doubles with Brazilian partner Bruno Soares.

The duo overpowered American Sam Querrey and Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 6-1 in sweltering west London heat to reach the quarter-finals.

After a tense tie-break, Murray and Soares sealed the first set 7-6 to gain the upper hand at Queen’s, moving halfway to victory with their 7-4 tie-break score.

And the duo, seeded third, powered on to victory after racing away with the second set to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Murray and Soares’ victory sets up a clash with American Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus of New Zealand.

In the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, British number two Naomi Broady came up against a resurgent Petra Kvitova, with the two-time Wimbledon champion winning in straight sets, 6-2 6-2.

The Czech player, 27, won her second match after Tuesday’s first-round triumph, as she continues her comeback from injuries suffered following an attack last year.

And Broady suffered a second exit as she and Heather Watson were eliminated in the women’s doubles by American pair Raquel Atawo and Christina McHale.

Broady and Watson started slowly, losing the first set 6-2, but roared back to take the second set by the same score to force the match into a deciding tie-break.

However, the United States duo proved too strong and came out 10-7 winners to progress to the last eight. Sportsbeat 2017
