Murray and Soares fall short in Queen's doubles final

Britain's Jamie Murray and his Brazilian doubles partner Bruno Soares failed to defend their title at Queen's as they fell to defeat in the final.

Australian John Peers and Finn Henri Kontinen were victorious 6-4, 6-3, as they ramped up the pressure ahead of Wimbledon next week.

Murray and Soares reached the final with a narrow victory over Austrian Oliver Marach and Croat Mate Pavic on Saturday, but couldn’t go all the way on Sunday.

A slow start to the match saw both pairs win their first four games each, before Kontinen and Peers comfortably saw out the ninth game without conceding a point to put pressure on Murray’s serve.

Both Murray and Soares had a chance at a volley to level the game at five games all but couldn’t finish.

After forcing them to deuce, Kontinen and Peers then broke Murray and Soares in the tenth game to win the first set 6-4 and put themselves in the driving seat.

Murry and Soares responded well, breaking in the third game to go 2-1 up, but failed to consolidate it the following game and were immediately broken back.

Kontinen and Peers then won the next three games to go 4-2 up after some enthralling rallies, and added a quick fifth with some excellent serving from Kontinen.

The Brit and Brazilian held their serve comfortably, leaving the Australian and Finn needing to hold theirs to win.

After a nervy first point in which Murray’s miss-hit return was left to loop in at the back, Kontinen and Peers saw out the hour-long game in West London to conclude the 2018 Queen’s Club tournament.

Despite falling short in the final, Murray showed his gratitude to the fans that had supported them throughout the week, and set his sights on Wimbledon.

He said: “It’s been awesome, we’ve had four great matches, and it was nice to play three of them on centre court in front of all you guys.

“Thanks for staying after the singles final to come and support all of us, we really appreciate that, making it a great atmosphere to play in.

We’re really happy with how the week’s gone and we’re looking forward to Wimbledon next week.” Sportsbeat 2018
