Muir clinches Diamond League crown in style

Laura Muir capped a perfect summer as she added the Diamond League title over 1500m to her European crown in emphatic fashion in Brussels.

The 25-year-old paced her race to perfection as she sat in fourth for the first two laps before powering away to victory in 3:58.49, half a second clear of American Shelby Houlihan with European runner-up Sifan Hassan third and Laura Weightman ninth.

That makes Muir the first Brit ever to win multiple Diamond League titles, having previously claimed the crown in 2016 and joining Abeba Aregawi as the most successful female 1500m runner in the event’s history.

On the final night of action in the Diamond League, Muir was far from the only Brit in action, with Shara Proctor narrowly missing out on her second crown.

The long-jumper managed 6m70 with her penultimate effort, which was good enough for second behind Olympic triple jump champion Caterine Ibarguen, who completed the double with this success.

Elsewhere Reece Prescod and CJ Ujah missed out in the 100m, with the former coming home fourth behind American Christian Coleman’s world-leading 9.79.

Jake Wightman also managed fourth in the 800m, coming home in 1:45.96, with Kenya’s Emmanuel Korir taking the victory.
