Muhammad beaten in quarter-final

Britain's Lutalo Muhammad has lost his quarter-final against Nicolas Garcia Hemme of Spain in taekwondo's under-80kg category at ExCeL.

Muhammad beat Tajikistan's Farkhod Negmatov 7-1 in the first round, despite a slow start. The Londoner was again roared on by a partisan home crowd, which on Thursday night had seen Wales teenager Jade Jones battle all the way to gold in the under-57kg.

Muhammad, European champion earlier this summer at the under-87kg, showed his mettle throughout the match but could not prevent the Spaniard from racing to a healthy lead, eventually losing 7-3.

Muhammad had tested his range with some head kicks in a scoreless opening round, before both fighters picked up penalties, which saw a tense second round end 1-1.

A head shot from Hemme, upheld on appeal, put the Spaniard 4-1 up with 90 seconds left.

Despite a rally from Muhammad, there was no way back as he lost 7-3 and he must now hope the Spaniard progresses to the final for the repechage later.

Italian Mauro Sarmiento, silver medallist in Beijing, had pulled off a shock when he edged past top seed Ramin Azizov 2-1.

However, any hopes Sarah Stevenson had of a lifeline through the repechage ended when American Paige McPherson, who had beaten her in the first round, was knocked out in the quarter-finals by Nur Tatar, the world number four from Turkey.
