Middleton set to make 400th international appearance at Men's Hockey World League Final

Bobby Crutchley has called upon his England team to prove their potential after naming an 18-man squad for the Odisha Men’s Hockey World League Final.

England are one of eight teams set to compete in Bhubaneswar, India, where former captain Barry Middleton could make his 400th international appearance.

Having made his debut in 2003, the 33-year-old has since gone on to represent England and Great Britain on 397 occasions, captaining Team GB at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Playing in Pool B, England will begin their campaign against Germany on December 1, before facing eight-time Olympic champions India and world number two side Australia.

It has proven to be a 2017 to remember for the men's squad, with Great Britain winning gold at the Azlan Shah Cup in May before England defeated Germany to win European bronze.

Rio 2016 Olympians Ian Sloan and Michael Hoare will miss out on the finals through injury, with Liam Ansell, Luke Taylor and James Gall set to compete at their first major senior tournament in an England shirt.

And with the 2018 Commonwealth Games and Hockey World Cup looming on the not too distant horizon, head coach Crutchley is keen to see what his team can do.

"We are really excited about the challenge ahead at the World League Finals in Bhubaneswar against some of the best sides in the world," said Crutchley.

"The tournament provides us with a great opportunity to learn more about our players and to both grow and improve the depth in our squad ahead of events in 2018."
