Ed Ling hopes to sign off the Olympic shooting competition by securing more success for Great Britain.
The 29-year-old from Somerset has given himself a chance to reach Monday's final of the men's trap, the event which will bring the curtain down on 10 days of competition at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich.
Buoyed by Peter Wilson's gold medal success in the double trap on Thursday, Ling lined up in the single-clay version.
He dropped two shots in the first round of 25 clays but steadily improved, firing 24 in round two and finishing with a perfect 25 for a score of 72. It leaves the 29-year-old from Somerset ranked 15th, three off the pace set by America's Michael Diamond, who was the only competitor to shoot 75.
With five shooters on 74 and a further seven scoring 73, he is in position to take advantage of any slip-ups and grab a top-six finish.
Ling was fortunate to miss a downpour which soaked two of the other qualifying groups, and after overcoming some early nerves he is confident of shooting well again over the final two qualifying rounds on Monday morning.
"With shooting anything can happen until the last target so it's full concentration right until the end," he said. "I was lucky with the rain, I just got away with that one.
"It was the first round so the nerves were going a bit but I got that out of my system and I'm raring to go for tomorrow."
Essex's James Huckle - who has already featured in two rifle events - goes in his preferred discipline on Monday morning, the three positions, along with Scotland's Jonathan Hammond.
The 22-year-old said: "The 3P is the event I am really here for. I really want to make the final, there's no doubt. That's the event I've been training for. I know in a way I'm putting pressure on myself but that's good, I really hope to put in the best performance in the 3P."
