Great Britain level after exciting day one of Davis Cup

Dan Evans won a dramatic five-setter against Denis Istomin but Cameron Norrie was overhauled as honours were even on day one of the Davis Cup World Group play-off against Uzbekistan in Glasgow.

Evans produced a brilliant display to see off World No.60 Istomin in five sets, coming back to take the last two sets in a marathon match.

Norrie looked set to make it 2-0 when he raced into an early lead against Jurabek Kalimov but he was pegged back by the 20-year-old and went down in five sets.

In the first match of the day, Evans completed a dramatic victory in five sets over Istomin, 7-6, 4-6, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Evans finished the first set strongly to take it in a tie-break 7-4 but Istomin then fought back to take the next two, despite being a break down in a second set.

Evans had it all to do after dropping the third 6-0 but he showed tremendous resolve to get himself back into the match.

He took the fourth 6-4 but went down an early break in the fifth in a topsy-turvy affair. At 2-1 down, Evans broke back immediately and even moved 4-2 ahead.

And while Istomin got back on serve, Evans finished the stronger and was able to break to close out the match after more than four hours of play to give Great Britain their first point.

Norrie was a set up in just 16 minutes against Kalimov in the second rubber, with the 20-year-old clearly nervous on such a big occasion.

However, the Uzbek player found his form and Norrie needed a break late in the second to move into a seemingly dominant position.

The third set went to a tie-break but when Kalimov took that, he grew even further in confidence and was able to close it out with two fairly comfortable sets, eventually winning 0-6, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2.

That leaves the tie on a knife-edge heading into day two, where Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot will play in the doubles, looking to take Great Britain to within a point of victory.
