GB women’s basketball eager to cause semi-final upset

Great Britain women's basketball team is making history at EuroBasket and Jo Leedham-Warner just doesn't want the fun to ever end.

Great Britain made history by becoming the first home nation to reach the Women’s EuroBasket semi-finals with a 62-59 success over Hungary,

The team, who have claimed a spot at a World Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Tokyo 2020 in February next year as a result, are riding high in the world of basketball and forward Leedham-Warner, one of the key driving forces behind GB’s success, is loving every minute.

“Just, wow. I’m just so proud of this team,” said Leedham-Warner.

“We came here expecting to do something, but I don’t know if I can honestly say I expected us to be in the semi-finals.

“From the start we were trying to get to the quarter-finals, but this team is just so special.

“We’re just enjoying the ride, man. We’re trying to get a medal now – we’ve actually got a chance.”

GB, who have also beaten Latvia, Ukraine and Montenegro at the tournament, are ranked 25

in the world at the tournament.

Saturday’s opponents France are ranked fourth, but head coach Chema Buceta is confident the history-breaking momentum will carry his team to victory.

“We came here to do something,” said Buceta.

“This is why we came. Now we have something big.”

The winners of Saturday’s game will play either Serbia or Spain in Sunday’s final.
