Froome and Cavendish on Tour de France record mission

Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish are hell-bent on matching Eddy Merckx long-standing records and etching their names deeper into the Tour de France history books this month.

Reigning champion Froome is favourite to land a fifth yellow jersey that would draw him level with greats Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Jacques Anquetil and Miguel Indurain.

If he is wearing yellow in Paris, Froome will also equal Merckx’s long-standing record of four consecutive Grand Tour wins after triumphs at the Vuelta a Espana and Giro d'Italia.

The Team Sky rider said: “I think this year’s race is going to be the biggest challenge of my career.

“Winning a fourth consecutive Grand Tour title and a fifth Tour de France victory are massive goals for me.

“I’ve got the support of an amazing team, with a balance of talent and experience in the guys around me, and a lot of work ahead.
