British number one Heather Watson admitted there were no excuses after she exited the French Open in the second round.
Watson boasted a perfect record against Sloane Stephens coming into their match at Roland Garros but after four straight wins against the American she lost 6-2, 6-4.
She had heavy strapping on her arm but refused to blame injury for the defeat, her fourth second round loss in five years in Paris. She made a nightmare start after losing her first two service games and never really recovered against a player who had beaten Venus Williams in the previous round.
"I gave away too many free points. I made too many unforced errors and she played well and just took advantage," said Watson.
"My arm is not an excuse. I took some painkillers before the match and had it taped up and I felt fine. It was just me, I was too sluggish and by the time I got into the match it was too late.
"It was a good opportunity for me but I'd didn't take it and I'm very disappointed."
Watson's defeat leaves Andy Murray as the sole British singles representative in Paris after the number three seed beat Portugal's Joao Sousa 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to set up a third round clash with Australia's Nick Kyrgios.
Murray picked up two time violations from umpire Pascal Maria for exceeding the 20-second limit between points but insisted he had no issues with the decision.
"Sometimes I play too slow and that's unintentional. I don't mean to do it," he said.
"As a player you have no idea how long you're taking in between the points but I made no issue of it. I got told I was playing too slow and I should try to speed up and I did."
