Franklin leads charge to two medals at European Championships

Britain’s women paddled onto the podium in Prague with gold in the C1 team and silver in the C1 events at the European Canoe Slalom Championship.

Ascot-born Mallory Franklin, double World Champion in Pau last year, clocked 119.58 seconds to secure silver in the individual trial.

The 23-year-old finished just 0.58 seconds behind eventual gold medallist, Austrian Viktoria Woolfhart but was a comfortable 2.81 seconds ahead of third-placed Elena Apel of Germany.

After Franklin won her fourth C1 European gong Bethan Forrow, 17, finished ninth on a promising first senior outing and Kimberley Woods was one back in tenth.

The trio combined in the C1 team event, dealing with the pressure of being last boat out and overcoming penalties on the eighth, ninth and tenth poles to clock a winning time of 142.7 seconds.

The team were a full 6.14 seconds away from France in the silver position and 11.50 ahead of third-placed Spain.

Teenager Forrow, in her first appearance at a senior event, stepped into the shoes of Eilidh Gibson- reigning World and European Team Champion alongside Franklin and Woods.

Britain have now won the C1 team event at the Europeans for the last three years.

Another teenager, Stafford and Stone racer Chris Bowers broke into fifth in the men’s K1, a pleasing return in just his second European Championships.

Bradley Forbes-Cryans, who qualified for his semi-final in sixth, ended eighth in the final with Rio gold medallist Joseph Clarke in 11th.

There was another near miss for the men in the K1 team event, as Bowers, Forbes-Cryans and Clarke were bumped off the podium by last boat out Czech Republic. Sportsbeat 2018
