Kyle Edmund booked his place in the second round of the French Open for the second consecutive year - but Andy Murray is facing a big fight at Roland Garros.
Edmund was a 7-6, 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 winner over Nikoloz Basilashvili in fading light but world number two Murray failed to complete his match after a day of weather delays in Paris.
He lost the first two sets 6-3, 6-3 to veteran Radek Stepanek before rallying to claim the third without dropping a game and was leading the fourth set, 4-2, when the umpire called off play, which will resume on Tuesday morning.
Murray hasn’t lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament since the 2008 Australian Open and is looking to stage a comeback from two sets down for the ninth time in his career.
British number three Edmund advanced along with Heather Watson -
- after winning nine of the last ten games, showing no ill effects from the ankle injury he picked up after a heavy fall in Nice last week.
"It was just a proper match that I felt I did well to come through,” said Edmund.
“However, it was a real battle because my opponent was playing some high-level tennis."
However, there was disappointment for fellow Brit Naomi Broady, although she forced American Coco Vandeweghe to three sets on her least favoured surface before going down 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Johanna Konta, Laura Robson and Aljaz Bedene are due to start their campaigns in Paris on Tuesday.
