Danson to captain England at EuroHockey Championships

Alex Danson will lead England in the upcoming EuroHockey Championships in the Netherlands later this month.

Record cap holder Danson will skipper the 18-woman squad for the competition, which runs from August 19 to 27 at the Wagener Stadium, in Amsterdam.

The squad contains several members of the Rio 2016 gold medal-winning team, including Maddie Hinch, Giselle Ansley, Nic White, Hollie Webb, Sophie Bray, Laura Unsworth and Lily Owsley.

The team will be led by assistant coach David Ralph as head coach Danny Kerry continues to recover from a heart attack suffered during the World League Semi-Final in South Africa, last month.

And Ralph believes his side will embrace the level of competition and lay down a marker for their rivals when the competition begins in less than two weeks’ time.

"The level of competition at these championships is always high and there are a number of good teams competing to win it," Ralph said.

"We are relishing the opportunity and challenge that awaits us as we look to continue our progression as a group."

England face Germany, ranked seventh in the world, 16th-placed Ireland and 17th-placed Scotland in pool B.

The four sides that make up pool A are hosts the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium and the Czech Republic.
