Couch and Toulson finish fifth with personal best

Tonia Couch and Lois Toulson finished an impressive fifth in the synchronised 10m platform final at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre.

The British pair scored a personal best 319.44 as they held their own in a world class final.

It could have been even better for triple Olympian Couch and Huddersfield diver Toulson who, at 16, is the second youngest member of Team GB.

The Brits were firmly in the medal mix up until the last dive, before scoring 63.36 for their ultimate effort, with 80.11 needed to clinch a surprise bronze.

“It was amazing,” said Toulson. “It was one of the best competitions that I’ve done. I really enjoyed it and I’ve definitely got a lot of experience from it as well.

“I’ve learned you need to enjoy it. I really enjoyed that competition and we ended up getting a PB together so it shows that’s important.”

Couch and Toulson have only been diving together for eight months, forging a partnership after an injury to Couch’s former partner Sarah Barrow, with whom she won Commonwealth gold.

And Plymouth diver Couch insisted the pair could be proud of how far they had progressed in such a short space of time.

“Some of the teams here have been competing together for years,” said the 27-year old. “We’ve been competing together for eight months so I didn’t want to go in panicking and we just wanted to give it our all.

“I think we would have been more nervous for that final dive if we were in the top three on the way through. But knowing we were fourth or fifth, I just relaxed, had fun and got on with it.

“The competition was so much fun and it was great to do synchro with Lois.”

Couch will return for the individual 10m platform preliminary on 17 August.
