Conway to lead delegation at Minsk 2019

Team GB judo player Sally Conway has been selected as Opening Ceremony flagbearer at the Minsk 2019 European Games.

The Games will kick off this evening (Friday 21 June) at the Dinamo National Olympic Stadium with a sell-out expected at the 22,000-seat stadium.

Conway selected from the 100-strong athletes at Minsk 2019 will kick off her European Games competition on Sunday 23 in the -70kg category.

Team GB will compete at the second European Games in 11 sports across 10 days, with 100 Team GB athletes competing. The Games will see over 4,000 athletes from 50 NOCs in attendance and over 200 medal events to be competed for.

Having been successful at Baku 2015, Team GB will be hoping for repeat success with Tokyo 2020 spots at stake for karate, shooting and table tennis, as well as key ranking points for other sports, such as judo, badminton and some cycling events.

Speaking after being given the special recognition, Conway said: ““Being asked to be Team GB’s flagbearer for the Minsk 2019 European Games is an absolute honour. I still can’t believe I was asked to lead the team out. I love being part of Team GB, it always feels so special, so this will be a proud moment for me and I just hope to do the team proud too.”

There was no doubt in Chef de Mission Paul Ford’s mind about Conway’s selection as he added: “We are lucky to have an incredibly talented group of athletes competing at Minsk 2019 but the decision to select Sally was unanimous. She has always lived the Team GB values, performed when it matters the most and approaches everything she does with great commitment and pride.”
