Commonwealth champions galore in British team for worlds

Double Olympic bronze medallist Max Whitlock and Claudia Fragapane lead the British artistic gymnastics team selected for next month’s World Championships in China.

Britain’s gymnasts enjoyed a successful Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as they competed for their respective host nations with Whitlock and Fragapane leading the way.

Whitlock, who won bronze on the pommel horse as well as in the team event at the London 2012 Olympics, claimed five medals including three gold while Fragapane made history in Scotland.

She became England’s most successful female at the Games in over 80 years with four golds with Whitlock joined at the worlds by Nile Wilson and Kristian Thomas.

All three helped England claim the Commonwealth men’s team title while parallel bars champion Daniel Purvis and pommel horse champion Daniel Keatings complete the men’s team with Courtney Tulloch.

Fragapane also helped England’s women to team gold with the same quintet – Becky Downie, Ruby Harrold, Hannah Whelan and Kelly Simm – earning selection for the worlds.

Gabby Jupp and Charlie Fellows have also been chosen making for a women’s team of seven in total with two to be named as reserves at a later date.
