Brownlee helps Great Britain claim silver at World Triathlon Series in Nottingham

Jonny Brownlee helped Great Britain earn a silver medal at the World Triathlon Series in Nottingham on Thursday.

Brownlee, with his teammates Non Stanford, Tom Bishop and Vicky Holland, finished 29 seconds behind the USA to claim the second spot after an impressive team effort.

Non Stanford took up the first leg, but it was Kirsten Kasper of the USA that led out in front after the swim, with France’s Cassandre Beaugrand overtaking her on the running section.

Stanford handed over to Bishop in fifth, who led the chasing pack on the bike and chased down Frenchman Pierre Le Corre, before handing over to Vicky Holland in fourth place.

Holland ramped up the pressure to close down the gap, while American Katie Zaferes took the lead and set up a solid platform for the final leg.

Brownlee took over from Holland and came out of the water in second place, pushing hard to reduce the gap between Great Britain and the USA.

Although the Brit closed the gap by nine seconds through the cycle and the run, USA’s Matthew McElroy was too far ahead and crossed the line in a time of 1:21:18 to claim gold.

Having helped Team England to silver on the Gold Coast earlier this year, Brownlee and Holland were delighted another medal

Brownlee said: “Another second, I’m quite good at coming second!

“It was a good race, we all gave it everything, the Americans were very strong and have a good team.

“I think the whole day was Katie Zaferes’, she was incredibly strong on the bike and coming onto the last leg I was never going to catch him [McElroy], but I gave it everything.”

Holland added: ““I really enjoy the relay, I think it’s the best one to watch from a spectator point of view and really fun to be part of.

“The year of the silver! But hopefully one day we’ll get up there.” Sportsbeat 2018
