Brits get the Blues in Birmingham

Three-time champion Shanaze Reade was eliminated from the BMX World Championships at the quarter-final stage on Saturday after a crash.

The 23-year-old, from Crewe, advanced serenely to the quarter-final and appeared set to progress after a strong start only to tumble to the dirt while leading the field.

Four riders advanced to the semi-final and despite returning to her saddle quickly, Reade, who won time-trial silver on Friday, was knocked out.

Abbie Taylor, who squeezed through qualifying to join Reade in the knockout rounds, was also eliminated.

In the men's competition, Liam Phillips crashed heavily and left the track on a stretcher. British Cycling later confirmed he had suffered a broken collarbone.
