British fencing duo out of singles

Sophie Williams and Louise Bond-Williams could not change the story for Britain's fencing team at the ExCeL as both lost their opening contests.

Williams, the 21-year-old from Cornwall chosen to give her Olympic experience, went down 15-6 to Italy's world number six Irene Vecchi.

Moments later, 30-year-old Bond-Williams, who also competed in Athens eight years ago, suffered a 15-8 defeat to Greek world number four Vassiliki Vougiouka.

With nobody in the men's epee it meant none of the 10-strong home squad, eight of them given host nation places, had managed to reach the last 16 in the individual events.

The biggest disappointment was medal hope Richard Kruse's heavy first round loss in the foil on Tuesday.

Still to come are the men's and women's team foil and there are only nine countries in those - but if Britain beat Egypt in the first round they then have to face top seeds Italy.
