British Eventers make encouraging start

British riders have made a strong start to the World Eventing Championship for Young Horses in Le Lion d'Angers, France.

Laura Collett and Obos Cooley took an overnight lead in the six-year-old class, posting a dressage score of 43.10 penalties.

It left them 1.5 penalties clear of Belgium's Karin Donckers and Lady Brown, with Dutch challenger Andrew Heffernan third aboard Regal Mix.

Collett's fellow Wiltshire-based eventer Kitty King led the seven-year-old section for much of the day on Persimmon.

But their score of 41.30 was overhauled by German Olympian Ingrid Klimke, who established a clear advantage from King on 33.30 after Glenn Grant 5 delivered the day's outstanding dressage test across both sections.

Dressage continues on Friday before the 42-strong six-year-old field and 66 seven-year-old competitors tackle Saturday's cross-country challenge.
