Barry Middleton: A career in numbers

Barry Middleton is the record-breaking captain of the Team GB Hockey team. He holds the most international appearances for Great Britain and England and will feature in his fourth Olympic Games in Rio 2016.

Age 18

Middleton made his international hockey debut in 2003, at the age of just 18. He has since gone on to become the most capped player in both the Great Britain and England teams.

Doncaster-born Middleton wears this number for Team GB.

3 All Stars

The number of times Middleton has been named in the FIH All Stars team. He achieved the feat in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

308 caps

Middleton beat 1988 Olympic gold medal winner Russell Garcia’s Great Britain and England hockey record of 307 caps in 2015. He’s now over 350 and counting.

4 Olympics

Rio 2016 will be Middleton’s fourth Olympic Games having been part of the Team GB hockey team in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012, when he captained the side.

1 special training session

Middleton enjoyed a training session with HRH Duchess of Cambridge during the build up to London 2012. Sharing the same surname as Duchess Catherine, Middleton is quoted as saying to HRH: “I get asked about that a lot, whether we are related.”

Middleton uses the Adidas X17 hockey stick, having switched to the product in 2013.
