Having been born in Maghera, county Londonderry, Wendy Houvenaghel only became a full-time cyclist aged 31 having previously been a dentist in the Royal Air Force.

She was fast-tracked on to the Olympic Podium Plan and repaid that faith by becoming the overall World Cup champion in 2005/06.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Wendy won individual pursuit silver before cementing her place as Northern Ireland’s greatest female cyclist by winning team pursuit gold at the World Championships in 2008, 2009 and 2011, although she retired from cycling in 2014.
