Gillian Cooke was born and brought up in Edinburgh and educated at George Watson's College where she began her sporting career in track and field with Edinburgh Southern Harriers.

As an athlete, Gillian competed in two Commonwealth Games in two different events – in pole vault in 2002, and then in the long jump four years later.

After a foot injury Gillian joined driver Nicola Minichiello in the two-woman bobsleigh as brakewoman following a trial in October 2008 and a year later the pair won gold at the World Championships in Lake Placid before competing at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
